Inmigración y Relaciones entre los Latinos
“Los puertorriqueños... son ciudadanos y son muy agresivos con los mexicanos. Son chavos que no tienen dinero y viven robando y agrediendo” ” Hortensia Martínez, coordinadora del Centro de Inmigrantes Staten Island" Listin Diario, 09/21/10
Si se fijan en esta cita que aparece en el periódico dominicano, Listín Diario, notarán que ésta refleja una vez más la incapacidad de muchos de pensar que todos los puertorriqueños no somos iguales, y revela uno de los fenómenos menos discutidos en los círculos de intelectuales y educadores puertorriqueños: el discrimen y prejuicios que existe contra ellos y ellos contra otros. Este asunto ha traído consecuencias que no todas las veces son aparentes y completamente explicitas, pero que no dejan de afectar estas comunidades: desde quienes son contratados en los programas que sirven o giran en torno a temas latinoamericanos y como se discute la historia de ciertos grupos hasta como tratamos a quien se nos presente en una oficina o aula.
A pesar de mis luchas para que se incluyeran argumentos académicos y estudios que demostraran lo contrario, algunos de mis colegas en City College, en sus cursos sobre multiculturalismo o fundamentos de ed. bil. no dejaron de presentar a los puertorriqueños como si fuésemos una sub-especie humana, con características tan fijas que nos acercan más al comportamiento automático de cierto animales y no como seres reflexivos y pensantes. Las razones para esta bomba de tiempo varían desde las personales hasta las políticamente e históricamente creadas para satisfacer los intereses de ciertos grupos.
Y no todas las razones para los prejuicios surgen de la hostilidad personal o enmarcada en discursos nacionalistas, racial o de clase. Conozco tanto latino que no para de dejarme saber lo mucho que adoran los puertorriqueños, amor étnico que siempre levanta sospechas y que se presta para los esquemas discriminatorios al igual que los mencionados en la oración anterior .

El Conchu’, la Nena Que Sabe Mucho y los Teenagers
Hoy, muy pocos puertorriqueños le espetan un “conchu’ ” (conchudo) a sus hijos, ni se refieren a los adolescentes como “teenagers” o les sorprende la sabiduría de las nenas. Durante una visita a una oficina del gobierno, una señora bastante mayorcita le dejó saber a la joven madre de una niña de unos cinco años, saltarina de losetas en espera de salir de aquel árido y claustrofóbico espacio, que su nena sabía mucho. Para algunos, los menos, una nena de cierta edad no debe demostrar lo que sabe. Mucho qué no fue preguntado, no es el tema a ser discutido en aquel entorno. Fuera de allí, sí.
Distinto a la antes mencionada señora, quedan muy pocos de los que dicen con cierto grado de preocupación, “Esa nena sabe mucho”. Una vez se les oye, no deja de sorprender la relación casi causal entre las generaciones y el manejo de las creencias sobre como criar o deben comportarse los niños. Las ideas que se tienen sobre lo qué es un niño, una niña, la adolescencia, y los fundamentos que subyacen dichas ideas no puede dejársele a los vendavales de la tradición, los religiosos, políticos de turno, académicos, y mucho menos a las agencias del gobierno encargadas de dirigir la educación y servicios a las familias. Estas ideas surgen de fuentes inesperadas: el comercio, las nuevas tecnologías, los viajes a Disney, y la reinterpretación y valorización de las ideas mismas.
Ni los “teenagers” o las nenas que saben mucho guían el diario vivir de la crianza y educación de la niñez y juventud, incluyendo a los jóvenes con una orientación sexual al margen de lo aceptado en un dado momento. Mucho menos, vamos a encontrar los mozos, aquellos adultos en potencia que conformaban la etapa antes de la edad madura. No extrañaba que un mozo de diecisiete años se “juntara” con una “mujercita hecha y derecha” de dieciséis porque las ideas de épocas anteriores a la modernidad no los veían como niños grandes; eran adultos en ciernes. Los mozos fueron reemplazados por los adolescentes”; y con ese cambio se les convirtió en miembros de una etapa distinta con expectativas basadas en una nueva concepción de las etapas del desarrollo de las crías.
El rock and roll, la psicología y el comercio especializado sembraron las semillas del cambio en torno a cómo se concibe la niñez, la adolescencia, su educación y las expectativas que tenemos en cuanto a cómo deben comportarse éstos. Frente a los “compu techies”, las futuras reinas de belleza, los metro-sexuales los padres y maestros se pierden al no tener claro cuáles son las ideas que determinan lo que se espera de la niñez y juventud, y muchos menos su definición sexual. Discutir y definir estas ideas no puede surgir solamente de la voz de los académicos, religiosos o gobierno: todos debemos participar en esa trasformación cultural..

Show Boat
Showboat no era la pieza de teatro musical americano. Era un club de transformistas, así le llamaban en aquella época, en la Avenida Fernández Juncos, cerca de la parada veinte y cuatro en Santurce. En aquel entonces había dos clubes de transformistas en el área metropolitana de San Juan: Showboat y Cotorrito
.
Eran los principios de los años sesenta y lo particular de ese cabaret consistía en que desde los que servían hasta lo que cantaban eran transformistas. Eric, La Ronda, Richie y otros que hoy no recuerdo son los nombres de aquellos jóvenes que cantaban o bailaban o servían tragos. Algunos eran compañeros míos en la universidad: estudiantes de ciencias, pedagogía, humanidades. Otros eran maestros, y otros sólo trabajan como transformistas. Todos, jóvenes serios y responsables en sus trabajo, y en unos de esos trabajaban al margen de lo aceptado por la sociedad.
“Hola, hola, no vengas sola”, cantaban los transformistas al empezar el show. Hola, hola, hola ven con tu amor. Hola, hola, hola mi nombre es… continuaban hasta que cada uno decía su nombre de pila, para terminar con un “Hola, hola, hola soy maricón”; y si mal no recuerdo, el público le hacía coro con este final. Años luz antes del Stonewall, en la isla del encanto había hombres y mujeres que se atrevían a reconocer su diferencia, con penas, risas reconocer su yo mas sexual; y en privado, protegidos por el bar, en el Showboat cantarle al yo centrado, al que no nos pueden quitar, ni negar. Ese yo que está ahí como todas las identidades sexuales: puro. Bueno, a veces, puro.
La vida gay nocturna de principios de los años sesenta fue desapareciendo para ser reemplazada por una más parecida a la de cualquier otra ciudad discotequera. El Showboat, Cotorrito, Búho (así le llamábamos algunos al Owl, el hermoso bar en el viejo San Juan), Sand and the Sea, Hill Top, Tamanaco, La Cucaracha le dejaron el espacio nocturno al Abbey, Julianas, Bachelors, Bocaccio: discotecas mixtas todas, las cuales a junto a los grandes hoteles homogenizaban a San Juan, La Marina se convirtió en SOFA, y tres amigos en busca de nuevos nortes al norte nos fuimos.

From the Vividora to the Hustler
A vividora is one of those words that can stimulate different sensations: erotic, sinister, clever, and dishonest. It is a word whose masculine counterpart, vividor, would not be used to describe the same qualities when applied to a woman nor would elicit the same reactions. A vividor is not erotic. A chulo is the one who plays that role. On the other hand, the word used to describe a male vividor in English, hustler, can suggest similar reactions as vividora does, but not the same moral judgments. A vividora has greater possibilities of social approval than a hustler. Those of us who have experienced both, hustlers and vividoras, know that when looking for support or compassion will find that vividoras are not judged as harsh as a relationship with a hustler would be. Recently I was robbed and deceived by a hustler and by a vividora a few years ago. When telling the story of both situations it was quite interesting to see how people react: A smile for the vividora, harsh moral judgments for the hustler. Answers to this question are quite obvious: when the situation is between a man and a woman is not as disturbing as when it is between a man and a man. When there is the possibility of sex, the judgment is worse. But isn’t the same lack of moral principles operating in both instances? Dishonesty and opportunism are not determined by the sex of the players but by the act. Or are we closer to the fifteenth century Versailles court where ridicule was the political strategy to be used and widely approved? Is it quite acceptable to be dishonest as long as it is between a man and a woman? Aren’t those making the judgments as guilty of the malady as those involved in it since moral relativism is the principle they are actually applying and not honesty regardless of the players. Not really, as this brief analysis of the world of hustlers, vividoras and the men who experience it. There are more of us living in this world of vividoras and hustlers than the reigning petite bourgeoisie moral framework would like to suggest. And all of us can still aim at redemption. Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's
Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that
knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend
the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them thatLeviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other
elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male
and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A
friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not
Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned
in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a
fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is
in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem
is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it
creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my
neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I
smite them?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath.
Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally
obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is
an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than
homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there
'degrees' of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if
I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading
glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some
wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the
hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by
Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig
makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two
different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing
garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester
blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really
necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town
together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to

El Flaco
El primer amor durante la adolescencia marca la memoria y las sensaciones, no se olvida: quizás por lo ridículo, quizás por lo sublime, quizás por lo complicado de las fuerzas que lo moldean. El mío fue por lo sublime, por lo revelador, por obligarme a aceptar que era homosexual, por enfrentarme a una vida donde ese amor no se presta para la armonía social y mucho menos religiosa. En el Puerto Rico de finales de los cincuenta y principio de los sesenta las fuerzas religiosas, culturales eran más poderosas que el amor mismo.
Fue en la universidad cuando por primera vez sentí que estaba enamorado, lo reconocí como un sentimiento real, acepté con dolor y trabajo lo que era una verdad absoluta, y me di el permiso de soñar con aquel de quien por primera vez me había enamorado. A lo adivino, pero de verdad enamorado. Callar y soñar eran mis únicos caminos. Vivimos juntos en el mismo hospedaje durante todo un año académico, nuestro primer año universitario. El tenia diecisiete años; yo, dieciséis. El nunca se enteró de cómo me sentía. Yo, cincuenta años más tarde sigo pensando en él. Allí en Ponce, en el hospedaje de Doña Esther, la libido se despertó como nunca antes.
No era la primera vez que me fijaba en otros muchachos; muchos años antes, la sensación ya había hecho su entrada, faltaba la claridad necesaria para poder identificar aquello como el maravilloso y dulce amor de un adolescente. No me atrevía ni reconocerlo y mucho menos cuando este amor era un amor homosexual. El terror y soledad que se siente frente a los primeros momentos cuando reconoces la homosexualidad llevan a muchos al suicidio, a las drogas, a la completa enajenación. Las sensaciones arropan y confunden; la realización y aceptación consciente sobre tan difícil y particular estado de la compleja sexualidad tardan en cuajarse.
Un amor clandestino es un amor prohibido; uno que mezcla los placeres, y cuyas interpretaciones del mismo conducen o a la rebeldía o al suicidio, a doblegarte o liberarte, a claudicar o a luchar. La fuerte y compleja sensación fue respondida con la separación. Abandoné el hospedaje y no volví a saber de mi primer amor. Estudie, encontré otros amores, y a compas del tango que veinte años no es nada, ni cincuenta tampoco, el flaco de mi juventud sigue en la memoria de los buenos recuerdos. Hoy, a la temprana edad de un sesentón, hacer público estas experiencias es una obligación moral y cultural, y quizás así ayudar a otros en situaciones parecidas a que ni claudiquen; mucho menos, se suiciden.
