AMERICAN CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS AND JUDAISM FUNDAMENTALISTS AND IMMIGRANT CHILDREN

Shame on them for supporting a system that is jailing children for no other reason, but being poor...

Dear Move On member,
I'm U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, and I believe that in America, we must never intentionally inflict trauma on children.
And that's why I'm writing to you today.
At a Border Patrol processing center in McAllen, TX, I witnessed something that is now seared into my mind: A large warehouse facility with cells constructed of fence posts and chain link fencing—like dog kennels or large cages.
But the style of construction isn't the issue. What is the issue is that in that facility U.S. agents are tasked with taking the children out of their parents' arms and putting them into cells with other children—with neither the children nor the parents knowing if they will ever see each other again.
Imagine a family that is persecuted abroad for its religion or political engagement, or a family targeted by a vicious drug gang. The family escapes to the United States, surviving harrowing experiences en route. Finally, they arrive to the shores of the United States, knowing that the U.S. has time and again treated families fleeing persecution with respect because so many Americans have a parent, grandparent, or ancestor that arrived to the U.S. fleeing persecution.
But instead, the Border Patrol—under a new plan concocted by Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump, and John Kelly—arrest the asylum seekers as criminals and proceed to take the screaming children from the arms of their protesting parents.
Let me state the obvious: This is wrong. Terribly wrong. Ripping the children away from their parents induces enormous anxiety for the parents. Where are their children going? Will they ever see them again? Who will care for them?
But even worse, this inflicts enormous trauma on the children. In a strange new land with a new language, the only security the children have is to be with their parents. Experts tell us (not that we need experts to tell us) that this is causing huge emotional trauma.
Harming children for any reason, including for the purpose of discouraging persecuted families from seeking asylum, is evil.

AS TO HOW A PUERTO RICAN WHO SPEAKS ACCENTED ENGLISH FEELS ABOUT “EL DIFÍCIL” AND “LA PECOSA” WHILE MUMBLING “OH JOSÉ CAN'T YOU SEE”

Not all American citizens whose parents and grandparents were also American citizens speak English as a native language; and not all want to sound like native speakers. For many Puerto Ricans who were born and raised in the islands, English is not only a second language, it is the language of the colonizer. For them, to learn to “masticar el difícil” with a thick accent is to recognize that you are not really equal when facing “la pecosa” and singing “Oh José, can’t you see”. If you are one of those Puerto Ricans previously mentioned, then you know what “masticar el difícil",  “la pecosa” mean, and who is the José who can't see. And not only you would know what these two phrases mean, you would also know what they represent politically to a lot of island born and raised Puerto Ricans.

This brief essay was activated by a recent event and the memory of a black South African professor at CCNY. The professor used to question my accent and my explanation as to why I sound like I, oh well, sound. He often used his experiences back home when learning English as a second language to criticize me when I did not allow him or some of the other “colleagues”* to correct my very widely open vowels. He claimed that he did not have traces of any foreign language influencing his mastery of English. And!? What he did not tell was that his accent or lack of it (really!) did not help him at all when facing the Apartheid system that forced him out of his own country. I guess it takes more than knowing to inquire scientifically when facing  “self awareness” issues and related political postures.

The recent event had to do with immigration agents; and in these times of persecution, separation of children from parents without any mercy or piety, marking and classifying people for the sake of political gains or pure unpasteurized racism, the professor and his non accented English position are completely secondary; though, if one knows how to inquire beyond the simplistic scientific method, one would be able to interconnect the relationship of one issue lo the other. The political, racial- supremacist climate in the USA today did not happen in a vacumn.

*One of these colleagues was a leading "constructivist" that when it came to learning languages behaved like a "behaviorist". When asked once, if she was familiar with Ana Teberosky and Emilia Ferreiro's research on learning to read and write, she -in order no to recognize her ignorance- said that she had seen their names listed on the literature. The list of Latin Americans researching language learning from a "construvist" perspective, theoretical framework, is much longer than Ferreiro and Teberosky, but, if she did not know the two leading ones, why continue? "'ndito" was, most probably, my internal reaction.

FLUID IDENTITIES AND DEGREES OF SEPARATION IN THE AGE OF TRUMPIAN SHADOWS

A South American gay man has, over the years, shown a great deal of desire to be part of a certain crowd, to hang out with a particular type of white middle class gay man, to be perceived as different from the other Latinos, claiming he is a member of Andean aristocracy; gradually, giving up on his old friends; until recently, with trumpian shadows appearing on every corner of the country, scaring those who look different from the idealized citizen, he decided to wear a baseball cap. Nothing strange so far, except that the cap is adorned with a Puerto Rican flag. One wonders, tries to recall the name of the Hungarian author who wrote the story about degrees of separation.
