"The influence of changing fashion as portrayed in the various media is an important potential influence on health-related behaviours, particularly in adolescence when peer pressure is reportedly strong." (Fashion consciousness as a social influence on lifestyle behaviour in young Irish adults. A. O'CONNOR, S. FRIEL and C. C. KELLEHER. Centre for Health Promotion Studies, Department of Health Promotion, Clinical Science Institute, University College Galway, Galway, Republic of Ireland, 1997)
"The promotion of ideology in which the working class identifies its values with the same as the ruling class is Marx’s idea of false consciousness. At the same time, this religious ideology helps sedate the working class from revolting and accepting the status quo.(http://www.examiner.com/article/false-class-consciousness-and-religion)
But if the pressure from the peers is stronger than class Identity or religious dogma dependence and subjugation, then the question is not about class differences but about fashion, and how it might serve to transform consciousness.
Will islamist young men and women reject those Darth Vader Star Wars costumes worn by some war mongers/fanatics, and start wearing more diverse kind of outfits within the limitations and possibilities of their different cultural values?
Are fashion designers, artists, writers able to counteract the intentions of the war mongers and religious fanatics that are trying to make everybody look like Darth Vader?
Since, with regards to self consciousness and related fashion, I was the first teenager in my family (see related writings on this topic in this blog), my interest on the topic is there there.... and certainly helped in my moving away from very rigid Catholic dogma.... Just wondering....
