(Notas libres) As a Puerto Rican who was brought up to see and identify himself as white, who had to shift racial perceptions and constructs once I moved to the USA, and has had to take a stand defending the beauty of multi cultural and racial fusion, "mestizaje, papi chulo, mestizaje", now I read this and feel that I understand their fear, but also, feel that if I am so faab and cosmopolitan and cultured, then why are they worried since it will be types like me who will replace their whites whites, or....., whatever!
Fusion is what happened in the Caribbean and much of Latinoamérica without any major problems.... well.... let's talk about the Sicilians and Sephardic jews.... and their mestizajes... or the Teutonics and Genghis Khan... and all the Khans around the East... As Peggy Lee's song "Then let's keep dancing" suggests.... or read Herodoto, Vasconcelos, Sarmiento, Coll i Toste and others on mestizaje again and again and again, not to agree with them but to see the sources.... to diminish the fear.....
You will not disappear... Just look at the amount of Puerto Ricans in the USA who cannot even know the difference between a china from China and a china from Maricao and they have not disappeared. Their European and Arawaks and Puerto Ricans ancestors from the islands did, but not their free of content identity... they are Puerto Ricans.... Are they? Are these whites white?
