Malagradecidos and the 1969 CCNY PR students revuelta
It was 6:30 on a rainy spring morning over 40 years ago that more than 200 black and Puerto Rican students padlocked the gates of the south campus at City College and took over 17 buildings to force the college to accept more minority students. These black and Puerto Rican students opened the possibilities for many other students to be able to attend colleges and universities, yet a few years later there were many who had benefited from the 1969 revolts engaged in the same racist practices and discourses that would have been used against them prior to the 69 revolt. It is not easy to forget the derogatory comments made about Puerto Ricans by some of my Latino colleagues (including a Multi-culti specialist) and students at CCNY. At some point, I wrote about those "malagradecidos".
