When Recaredo the Visigoth king of Toledo converted from arianism to catholicism in 587 some of my ancestors decided to follow those who disagreed with the king and moved south to Tarifa, where there was freedom to practice different religions, and lots of opportunities to make money. Later on, a woman in the family fell in love with an Alexandrian merchant who was also an arianist. After living for a while in El Andaluz they decided to move on, crossed the sea, and continued further south, following a caravan of rug transporters, since they wanted to explore this kind of business, moving from village to village, buying and selling rugs, marrying their children to new kinds of peoples; never expecting that some day their descendants would end up in Puerto Rico, and then, their descendants would move up north again to work as elementary schools teachers in the South Bronx. And now, one of them is good friends with a descendant of Recaredo who is currently living in Frankfurt, a very visigothic town. Recaredo's descendant is neither a catholic nor an arianist; she is more like an non believer agnostic, and is allergic to rugs.
