In the gay world there are quite a few men like the one who recently triggered Chris Cuomo’s anger. It is a passive-aggressive type of cruelty. I have also met some women who use that violence inciting technique. Men -the more masculine type- tend to prefer the physical challenge when demeaning the target, but rarely use the “bitchy” mode. A man who uses the “passive-aggressive” approach is sort of “queenish.” In gay reunions there is always one of those looking to be the center of attention, by annoying somebody else. Usually, without losing their cool they make a cruel remark to hurt or embarrass those that are called in post-modern lexicon the “significant others.” Why they do it would require an extensive treatise on Lacan’s psychoanalytic interpretation of the behavior. In the gay world, most of the responses would be limited to an equally passive-aggressive full of sarcasm remark or, often, a facial gesture resembling one of the great nasty grand dames of Hollywood: Bette Davies, Joan Crawford. "Read my hand" was what a black drag-queen recently said in a similar situation when challenged by a white one at a bar, and then added, "don't fuck with mama, mama has a college degree." In Puerto Rico, those type of gay men are called “Locas bitchas.”
