The often quoted Marxist based theoretical construct -”when the evolution of consciousness does not match the material base, a crisis can take place in a given society, leading it to either a revolution or complete self destruction”- has been used to study individuals who experience at a certain age, a clash between how they view themselves (consciousness) and how they actually look (the physical material base). Some will go for plastic surgery until they look like masks, caricatures (self destruction), or they accept the crisis and engage in self reflection (revolution).
