SHIT, URINE, ROCKS, BUSHES, SHOPPING MALLS, SPIRITUALITY, PROCREATION OR ABSTINENCE

The University of Puerto Rico professor of African studies, José Cabån Torres, wrote (“Encuentro con Aintonlá”, 80grados.net) about this orisha in a West African village that protects its inhabitants and, particularly, helps women who otherwise are infertile to become pregnant. According to the story told by the villagers, a woman who once lived there suddenly went to a hill nearby and as she was gradually being sucked-in by the terrain, told the other women that those who were not able to have babies, to shit and pee on top of the hill where she ended up as part of the soil, and then, they would be able to be impregnated and procreate. Her name was Aintonlá and became an orisha in the Yoruba religion. Pantoja, a drag queen in a show in San Juan once asked why the Virgin Mary only appeared on top of bushes and rocks and never in a shopping mall. According to the book A Course in Miracles, each culture’s spiritual belief system is subject to its needs and capacity to understand related phenomena, including miracles; and for some, these can only occur in nature, helping with procreation or promoting abstinence.
